Set a cap on square footage for residential construction. There is no reason for McMansions; besides being aesthetically damaging, they undermine the rural character of New Paltz that so many cherish.

We can. It’s a fairly simple zoning law. In fact, many communities use exactly that tactic to prevent big box development. If a Wal-Mart needs 100,000 square feet of space, you simply make sure that in every zone in the community, you can’t have more than 50,000 square feet of commercial space.
